AND BE IT FURTHER KNOWN that at the date hereunder written the last Will and Testament (a copy whereof is hereunto annexed of the said deceased was proved and registered in the District Probate Registry of His Majesty's High Court of Justice at Birmingham and that Administration of all the Estate which by law devolves to and vests in the Personal representative of the said deceased was granted by the aforesaid Court to HARRY LUCAS and WILLIAM HENRY ROBINSON the Executors named in the said Will

William Cadman and Ellen Stringer were married on June 10 1878 in the Parish Church at Mancetter. William Cadman was a Bachelor aged 22, a Hatter living in Mancetter. Ellen Stringer was a spinster living in Mancetter. The father of William Cadman is given as John Cadman a labourer. The Father of Ellen Stringer is given as Joseph Stringer also a labourer. The Witnesses at the Wedding were William Lowe and Emma Cadman (probably William's Sister). The Ceremony was conducted by E. F. Mathews. The certificate number is 41.

DEATH OF MR CADMAN ~ We regret to record the death of Mr. William Cadman, Fishmonger, Market Street, Atherstone, which took place on Monday Evening. Deceased who was 53 years of age had been ill for some time past, having been first laid up with a liver complaint. This was followed by dropsy, and the immediate cause of death was heart failure, deceased passed away rather unexpectedly. The funeral took place at the cemetery yesterday afternoon and was attended by numerous relatives and friends.

 

Barbara Holtham nee Roberts said that William Cadman went to North America and was nearly downed in the St Lawrence River. (No Dates Given).

She also said that he sang in Mancetter Church Choir.

He had three shops in Atherstone over the years including a high class Fish, Game and Poultry shop supplying the genrty.

The 1912 and 1924 Kelly's Director list Cadman, William Fishmonger, 6 Market Street, Atherstone.

He was also listed in the Phone book.

MARY ANN STRINGER 1828: Mary Stringer married William Lea, a soldier (private) in the 82nd regiment, on 23 October 1850 at the registry office in Portsea Island. She was illiterate but he able to sign his name. Both witnesses illiterate.

On any subsequent certificates Mary has given her father-in-laws name in place of her father. Mary had a daughter by her first marriage to William Lea - Sarah Ann - known as Annie who stayed on in England but later came out as a teenager and met her husband to be - Daniel Draper on the ship to NZ. She apparently made a trip back to England some years later with her family.

Husband THOMAS GILBERT 1835: 1851 cencus - occupation general servant. Arrived NZ aboard "Indian Queen" 1857. Lived at Ohariu until about 1979 then went to Woodville. Jurors list District of Port Nicholson - Thomas Gilbert - Wgtn - Carter.

The Thomas Gilbert family arrived in NZ from Warwickshire, England on the Indian Queen in 1857 and settled in the Ohariu Valley out of Wellington. Around 1879 he left Wellington and settled in Woodville where he owned a farm and ran the Central Hotel. His first wife died and was buried in Ohariu. He remarried a much younger woman who increased his offspring but from all accounts this was not a very successful relationship.

THOMAS GILBERT 1835: Arrived NZ aboard "Indian Queen" 1857. Lived at Ohariu until about 1979 then

went to Woodville. General servant aged 16 in 1851 cencus.
