The birth was reported by William Smedley of Mark Lane on 22 May 1841. The registrar was Richard Cheatle. The certificate reference number is 490. Could Henry have been a twin or was the registra being very accurate.

I give and bequeath the whole of my joinery working tools and tool chest unto my sons Sam, Ernest and Hector to be divided amongst them as they shall agree: and to my sons Ernest and Hector my trade books and old plans and papers. And I give and bequeath the residue of my estate and effects of what so ever nature and where so ever situated, to my dear daughter Mary Louisa for her sole use during her lifetime and after decease of my said daughter Louisa to be divided between the whole of my children then living at the time of her death. I appoint my son William Smedley of Holmesdene Ashby de la Zouch and Rev. Jabez Bell of Whalley Range, Manchester as the Executors of my last Will. And I hereby revoke all former wills and codicils. Be it known that HARRY SMEDLEY of "Mayfield" Smisby Road, Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire who died there on 15th day of December 1925 and duly executed his last Will and Testament

That William Smedley son of the said deceased and Jabez Bell the Executors named in the said Will both survived the said deceased and died without having proved the said Will.

That Mary Louisa spinster daughter of the said deceased the residuary legatee and devisee for life named in the said Will also survived the said deceased and died without having taken upon herself Letters of Administration (with the said Will annexed) of the estate of the said deceased.

AND BE IT FURTHER KNOWN THAT THE DATE HERE UNDER WRITTEN Letter of Administration with the Will

(a copy where of hereunto annexed) of all the Estate which by law devolved to and vests in the personal representatives of the said deceased were granted Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice at the District Probate Registry thereof at LEICESTER to Samuel Mason Smedley of 8 Smisby Road aforesaid Retired Carpenter the only lawful child of the said deceased to survive the said Mary Louisa Smedley deceased and as such the residuary legatee and devise substituted in the said Will.

And it is hereby certified that an affidavit for Inland Revenue has been delivered wherein it is shewn that the gross value of the said estate of Great Britain. (exclusive of what the said deceased may have possessed or entitled to as a trustee and not beneficially) amounts to £640.0.0 and that the net value of the estate amounts to £330.0.0

And it is further certified that it appears by a Receipt signed by an Inland Revenue Officer on the said Affidavit £5.17.5 on account of Estate Duty and Interest on such duty has been paid.

Samuel Smedley Widower, aged 37, a Joiner of Smisby Road, Ashby de la Zouch married Mary Elizabeth Poyser a widow aged 32 of The Callis, Ashby de la Zouch. The father of Samuel is given as Henry Smedley a joiner, The father of Mary Elizabeth is given as James Chadwick (deceased) a Carter. The witnesses were William Rouse and Mary Bradbury.

Sam was regarded as "The Black Sheep of the family". It is believed that he upset is family by marrying a widow who was five months pregnant in the Register Office at Ashby and becoming a member of the Spiritualist Church in Ashby de la Zouch.

Sam was a very keen beekeeper and had about quite a number of hives and exported queen bees to Europe.

He was a member of the Spiritualist Church in Ashby de la Zouch.

He always had sugared almonds in his pockets to give to children.

You may think this remarkable but I actually remember her address. It was 'Santa Ysabel', Smisby Road, Ashby De La Zouch. She was very kind to me and gave me a book of poems which I still have.

I also seem to remember a company called Smedleys based in Ashby who were Coal Merchants. I hope this info.is of value from

Hector Cecil Smedley and Dorothy Payne were married at The Primitive Methodist Church, Burton Road, Ashby de la Zouch on 8th August 1920. Hector was aged 26, a bachelor who's occupation was a Bricklayer (Journeyman) he lived at 8, Smisby Road, Ashby de la Zouch. Hectors father is given as Samuel Mason Smedley a Carpenter. Dorothy was aged 20, a Spinster whos occupation was an assistant at the Co-operative store, she lived at 87, The Callis, Ashby de la Zouch. Her Father is give as George Enoch Payne a General Dealer. The witnesses at the wedding were Noel V. Smedley (Hectors Brother) and Charlotte Smedley who were married at the same ceremony. William Hughes signed as the authorised person for the said church. The certificate number is 44.

Hector enjoyed keeping animals as a hobby and kept pigeons, rabbits, cats and a dog.

He was a keen gardener and had three allotments until he and Doris bought a large garden which they turned in to a nursery and sold both a wide variety of plants, vegetables, fruit and cut flowers. Bees were also kept in the garden.

Hector was a keen sportsman in his ealry life and played football and cricket for Ashby Town.

Hector was over generous and very often when work mates said that they were "hard up" he would give them mony out of his wages and would have little left when he got home much to Doris's disgust. He often lent his work mates tools that were often not returned.

He often repared property for the broad family, being a qualified bricklayer for no payment.

Article that appeared in Garden News when Dorothy Smedley (nee Payne) was about 78 years old.

Mrs Smedley was seventy eight last summer and I would like to tell you some of the things which she does to make her my choice for your "Go-ahead Gardener competition."

She has a garden approximately 3/4 acre. This is kept in apple pie order by herself apart from the occasional job such as cutting the hedge. Not satisfied with this task alone she has run the garden as a commercial enterprise for a number years now As well as a peaceful garden with lawns, pools, herbaceous borders, a variety of shrubs, extensive fruit and vegetable patches, she has three greenhouses one erected only last spring - at a time in life which most people are looking for less work Mrs Smedley sells over thirty different varieties of bedding plants, including latest novelties chrysanthemums, begonias, geraniums, rock plants, houseplants, perennials, hanging baskets cactus gardens, brassica and other vegetable plants, and this is only her spring produce. In the summer, she keeps regular customers supplied with tomatoes, cucumbers and cut flowers (even going to the trouble to follow dedicated flower arrangers around her garden to cut specific blooms). For Chris tmas dozen bowls of bulbs are forced, plant gardens prepared, houseplants propagated and this is in addition to supplying wallflowers and biennials and

roses (for which she is an agent).

Mrs Smedley works a ten hour day all year around at her garden, often longer (she dashes home for lunch cooked in her preset cooker!) Her one-day out a year is visit to Shrewsbury Show to look for suitable new plants, garden frame or heater whichever is required. She follows a very strict -routine, without which she admits she would not be able to cope with the work. She is always willing to help others with their gardening problems. If you don't believe these notes then just go and see what lies behind the green door at the top of North Street, Ashby de la Zouch. Mrs Smedley really is incredible for her age a real example and source of admiration

Also Known as "Doris"

Doris before she got married was in service at Colonel Atkins at Rothley, near Hinckley she was a Parlour Maid. This is where she met Clara (wife of Thomas Cadman) who was the cook. This link led her Daughter Dorothy meeting her husband in the future around 1944.

(Earlier she was in service with Dr. Logan a Doctor working in Market Street, Ashby de la Zouch).

The birth was registered on 30th September 1910 and signed by Norah Kathleen Cadman. 2 Raddlebarn Road has been found to be Selly Oak Hospital. The birth was registered in the registration district of Kings Norton in the county of Worcester. Its number is 109.

William George Cadman (a bachelor, aged 35 years, a coal miner (loader underground) of 13 Wood Street, Ashby de la Zouch married Dorothy Cadman (a spinster, aged 25 years, a shorthand typist of 13, Wood Street, Ashby de la Zouch). William George Cadman died on 1 September 1988 at Abbey House Nursing Home, Cliftonthorpe, Ashby de la Zouch. His date and place of birth is given as 20 September 1910 ay Kings Norton. His occupation and usual address is given as a Coal Miner (belt driver, below ground retired) 16 Holywell Avenue Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. The death was reported by his son A***** ***** of 7, *** *****, *****, *****, D*****. The cause of death is givne as Bronchopneumonia signed by his GP Doctor V A Church MB. The Death was registered on 1 September 1988. The entry number is 214.

Norah Kathleen worked at Atherstone Hall. No name of the father is given on the Birth Certificate. However my mother spoke to his older Sister Kath in the Summer of 2002. She said that she was told by the staff of Atherstone that the father of William George Cadman was the Butler at Atherstone hall whose name was "Udall" These facts were also confirmed by William Georges middle Sister Barbara.
