1911 Census

Needs a lot of working out!  Lot's of Crossing out on the original census form. The enumerator may have had a word with the family. On Mary's line it clearly state that she gave birth to seven children all surviving. Therefore all children on this census form must all be her illegitimate children. She must have been a pretty tough lady working as a Colliery Banksman! Also her 17 yearold daughter working as a labourer in a brick yard.

(E-Mail received 18/07/05 from Kevin Powdrill - Have just been browsing your web site and came across the following reference "S084, photocopy of newspaper article from John C. Smedley reads:

"Heroic Rescues at 81.--Mr . Harry Smedley, who is eighty-one years of age,

holding in his arms little two-year-old Betty Powdrill, whom he saved from  drowning . . ."

This interested me as Betty was my fathers Sister.  My father was born in Old George

Yard, Ashby, in 1918, and Betty (born in 1920) was his younger sister.

Their  parents were Harry Powdrill and Henrietta Hooper They were family of 11 Children, Six by the name of Tucker (Henrietta's previous husband) and  5  Powdrill's. I cannot remember hearing this story being mentioned in the family. I  would  greatly appreciate details of where you obtained this article, would be a  great addition to the family scapbook

Memories from Tony Smedley

Grandad Sam Smedley was of course a keen bee-keeper and looked after hives for a number of other people. Derek and I once accompanied him to a farm on Smisby Road (the name of which temporarily escapes me, but is now an industrial site, I believe)  There was a big walled garden in which were a number of hives.  Sam never wore any protective clothing and used a makeshift smoker, and we lads were rather scared of the swarms of buzzing bees.  He said " They wunner hurt you! Stick your head in a bush if they come for you!"  I remember that with good  reason, I stuck my head in a bush and got stung on my bottom - we wore short trousers of course.  For many years I believed that it was due to his weird sense of humour. I am not sure, but I think the farmer's wife applied some sort of relief.

They also had a pet young horse, which trotted around  quite freely and came into the kitchen whilst we were there. I suppose that it was in fact quite small, but it terrified me!

Sam was frequently called out to deal with wasps nests.  He used such things a s cyanide which would be very diffcult today!  On one olcc asion we went with him to eradicate a nest on the banks of the "river"  behind Smisby road which was close to the footpath and had resulted in too many stings.  He used something, probably cyanide, to kill off the wasps and we went back later to dig out the nest. This was carried back home to Burton and  we put in the "back bedroom" which Derek and I used as a playroom.  The next morning the room was full of wasps, which did not make Mam very happy and scared us!

This reference to Jabez in a history of Doddridge Memorial Congregational Church, Northampton

Quote ----   When the Education League was established in St. James' in 1898, some of its most active workers were recruited from the two Nonconformist chapels, Harlestone Road Primitive Methodist and Doddridge Memorial. At that time, St. James' had only the Church of England School—in common with the larger proportion of English villages.

In the church minutes, the first reference to the coming storm occurs in August 1898. Messrs. Whitford, Lack, and Edward Lewis were appointed representatives on the committee to deal with the provision of religious teaching for those children whose parents exercised their right to withdraw them from religious instruction of a denominational nature. Alternative teaching was provided at St. James' Hall—the old cafe on the Square, —and the two Nonconformist ministers, Rev. Jabez Bell of Harlestone Road, and Rev. T. Neale, were responsible for arranging it. Feeling ran high, causing " the falling out of faithful friends," and the vigilance of parents was enlisted to prevent anything in the nature of undue " persuasion."
