William Newdall was born at 6.30 on 2 January 1860 at Sutton on the Hill. He was

by Caroline Newdall the mother of Sutton on the Hill on 29 January 1860. The
certificate number is 237. The registration district is Tutbury in the counties
of Stafford and Derby. Obviously this is yet another possible example of a
misspelling of the name Udall.
Marriage (Ref: birth Marriage Death Certificates/M3xUdallMarriage1882)
The marriage took place on 21 June 1882 in the Parish Church, Witherley, in the
county of Leicester but in the registration district of Atherstone,

Sarah Hall (a spinster aged 28 of Witherley). The father of the groom is given

also a gardener.
(The given ages of the bride and groom are probably inaccurate). The witnesses
were Arthur John Wheatley and Annie Hall.
20 June 2003 note from xxxx
It seems there was a name change somewhere along the line. I have found the
family of William prior to the 1881 census with the name
"Nudall" and occassionally as "Newdall" the name is used in the Sutton on
the Hill area of Derby but is rare elsewhere.
There is the odd registration at Lichfield and one death at Belper.
Prior to about 1820 the family probably lived in Staffordshire. Williams
birth was probably registered under the name "Newdall".
William and his future wife Sarah Hall were both in Service at
Kilsall House, Dinnington, Shropshire.
The head of the house was George T. Hartley a "Magistrate C Stafford No
Occupation". William age 22 was employed as "Butler Domestic Serv" Sarah age 30
"Housemaid Domestic Serv".

In 1891 William was resident in a Cottage at Dunstan, Stafford Road,

by Caroline Newdall the mother of Sutton on the Hill on 29 January 1860. The

of Stafford and Derby.

20 June 2003 note from xxxx
It seems there was a name change somewhere along the line. I have found the
family of William prior to the 1881 census with the name
"Nudall" and occassionally as "Newdall" the name is used in the Sutton on
the Hill area of Derby but is rare elsewhere.
There is the odd registration at Lichfield and one death at Belper.
Prior to about 1820 the family probably lived in Staffordshire. Williams
birth was probably registered under the name "Newdall".
1881 Census
William and his future wife Sarah Hall were both in Service at
Kilsall House, Dinnington, Shropshire.
The head of the house was George T. Hartley a "Magistrate C Stafford No

From "The Atherstone News" Friday 16th June 1917
Mrs. W. S. Udall South Street, Atherstone was officially notified yesterday of
the death of her husband, Corporal William Sydney Udall Royal Engineers who was
killed in action on June 3rd
The first intimation came from Captain Kidd, of the same company, who wrote on
June 4th to the widow as follows:
"It is with a sad heart that I have, to write to tell you that your husband was
killed by shell fire yesterday morning about a quarter past eleven outside our
camp. Death was instantaneous as he was within a yard or two of the place where
the shell struck the ground, so that be suffered no pain.
We laid him to rest this morning in a military cemetery here, and the
chaplain says he will have a photograph of the grave taken, as soon as we have
put up a cross and send it to you. I wish to tell you of the deep sympathy which
the officers and men of the company feel for you in your loss which they also
feel as their own for he was deservedly popular with all. For my own part I have
lost a true friend."
Serg.-Major W. H Evans writes:-" Please accept the heartfelt sympathy of all the
N.C.O.'s and men of my company in the great and sad loss of your husband who was
killed in action by shell fire on Sunday, the 3rd June, at about
11am We are all grieved by the loss of one to whom we were so much
attached, and his absence will be felt by no one more than myself. 'Syd,' as we
always called him, was ever ready to oblige. Whether at his work or in play, he
was ever the same - always ready to lend a hand to others. We shall all miss him
very much. It may be a little
consolation for you to know that your husband suffered no pain.
He was killed instantaneously.
We laid him so rest in the new military cemetery at--. The name will
probably be supplied to you by the authorities. The grave will be marked with a
wooden cross bearing a suitable inscription, and the chaplain who read the
burial service, promised to have a photograph taken and forward the same to you
as soon as possible 'We all hope you will have strength so bear up under the
great trouble; and may God comfort you and your dear children and all other
members of the family. Our crosses are heavy, but the cross you are called upon
to bear is tar more heavy. God be
with you"
Corporal Udall (elder son of Mr. and Mr.W. Udall, South Street) was 32 years of
age, and was well known in Atherstone.
He enlisted voluntarily in the early parts of May, 1915 and went out to
the troups in January 1916. Previous
to joining the colours be was for some time butler at Atherstone
Hall and for several seasons was a playing member of the Atherstone
Cricket Club. He was at home on leave from the front for the first time a month
ago and was killed a fortnight after his return. He leaves a widow and three
young children.

West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Grave or Reference Panel Number:II. C.
17.Location:Poperinghe New Military Cemetery is located 10.5 km west of Ieper
town centre, in the town of Poperinge itself. From Ieper, Poperinge is reached
via the N308. From Ieper town centre the Poperingseweg (N308), is reached via
Elverdingsestraat then directly over two small roundabouts in the J.
Capronstraat. The Poperingseweg is a continuation of the J. Capronstraat and
begins after a prominent railway level crossing. On reaching the town of
Poperinge, the left hand turning from the N308 leads onto the R33 Poperinge ring
road. 1 km along the N33 lies the right hand turning onto Deken De Bolan. The
cemetery is located 100 metres from the ring road level with Onze Vrouwedreef on
the right hand side of the road. Historical Information:The town of Poperinghe
(now Poperinge) was of great importance during the First World War because,
although occasionally bombed or bombarded at long range, it was the nearest
place to Ypres (now Ieper) which was both considerable in size and reasonably
safe. It was at first a centre for casualty clearing stations, but by 1916 it
became necessary to move these units further back and field ambulances took
their places. The earliest Commonwealth graves in the town are in the communal
cemetery. The Old Military Cemetery was made in the course of the First Battle
of Ypres and was closed, so far as Commonwealth burials are concerned, at the
beginning of May 1915. The New Military Cemetery was established in June 1915.
The New Military Cemetery contains 677 Commonwealth burials of the First World
War and 271 French war graves. The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald
Blomfield.

Retired because of injury. Manager, Atherstone Town
Ted Udall became Derby County's regular Right - Back when England International
Tommy Cooper joined Liverpool. His injury problems began on Easter Monday 1935,
when he dislocated a shoulder against Everton. He was only out for one game and
was encouragingly consistent the following season until he aggravated the injury
in the sixth round FA Cup tie against Fulham. From then on, Udall was always
liable to shoulder trouble and the injury was so persistent that he needed 12
operations After leaving the Baseball ground. In the early post-war years; Udall
was of Manger of Atherstone Town.
Made 88 appearances for Derby County (no goals) between 1934 and 1937
Baptism: 24 Aug 1910, Atherstone
I have just made a fascinating discovery that could take our
Udall line back further (back to 1615 and earlier). I have been in
communication with Gay who has a web site on Tribal Pages. Our scenario is
this:
We were wondering if; Francis Udall (Udale) b 1716 at Ellastone
who married Mary Schemilt in Gays tree, is the same as the Francis m Mary in my
tree? The Francis in Gay’s tree m Mary Schemilt in 1735, they had, Richard (no
birthdate as yet) Mary b1740 and Matthew b 1743 all born Ellastone.
Our early tree therefore possibly looks something like this:
