Our Top Tips For February

  

·      Start to prune large-flowered late varieties of clematis, feed after pruning with Growmore.

·      Prune wisteria, shortening side-shoots to 2.5cm.

·      Split clumps of over-crowded snowdrops; replant in groups of 5.

·      Continue to plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, perennials and roses.

·      Continue to mulch established borders.

·      Prune rose trees; apply a rose fertiliser after pruning.

·      Pierce lawns with a garden fork at six-inch intervals to aerate the soil.

·      In the greenhouse, seeds can be sown in a heated propagator.

·      Winter containers need regular dead-heading especially pansies and primulas.

·      Sow broad beans, early carrots and parsnips under cloches.

·      Continue to plant bare-rooted fruit trees.

·      Apply a spray of winter wash over trunks and branches of fruit trees if pests and diseases have been a problem.

·      Cut back decaying plants and remove dead leaves from ponds.

·      Dress the surface around alpines with lime-free coarse grit.

·      Buy seed potatoes and onion sets.
