INVESTMENT IS PROMISED AS GARDEN CENTRES ARE TAKEN OVER

Two independently-owned garden centres in Derbyshire have been taken over by a larger chain.

Derby Garden Centre, in Alfreton Road, Little Eaton, and Matlock Garden Centre, in Nottingham Road, Tansley, have both been sold to Guernsey firm Blue Diamond Group for an undisclosed sum.

Both garden centres have been sold by Garden Centres of Excellence, which is based at the Tansley centre.

The deal also sees Blue Diamond take over the management of a third centre owned by Garden Centres of Excellence - Chatsworth Garden Centre at Chatsworth House.

Blue Diamond says the purchase of the two centres, and the taking over of the management of the third, should boost its annual turnover from £33m to £41m.

This would make the company the third-largest garden centre group in the UK.

Garden Centres of Excellence was founded 40 years ago by John Tarbatt, who began by opening the Tansley centre.

Over the years, he and his family have built up the business to include centres at Derby, Chatsworth, Clowne and East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.

Blue Diamond has risen to prominence in the UK in recent years. The group has won a number of industry awards for its garden centres and in-house restaurants.

Its flagship centre in Stoke has been named Best UK Centre for three years running by the American National Landscape Association.

Blue Diamond says it plans to invest in both centres but still retain their individual character.

Managing director Alan Roper said: "John and his family have created wonderfully independent, successful and personality-driven centres.

Blue Diamond recognises the commercial value of protecting the independence and character of these.

My ambition is to carve out a niche market and maintain that distinctive point of difference.

Tansley, which is a relatively small site, will give me the opportunity to try out an upmarket boutique format, allowing it be different from Derby."

Mr Tarbatt, managing director of the Gardens of Excellence Group, said: "Blue Diamond is a well-established and very respected name in our industry.

"It has the expertise and investment capital to improve the business, which is good news for our staff and customers."
