Generation No. 3

7. SARAH3 HALL (EDWARD2, EDWARD1) was born 15 Jan 1850 in Upper Millichope, Eaton Under Heywood, Shropshire. She married WILLIAM UDALL 21 Jun 1882 in Parish Church of Witherley in the County of Leicester and Registration District of Atherstone, son of WILLIAM UDALL and CAROLINE TIPPER. He was born 22 Jan 1860 in Sutton on the Hill, Derby, and died 27 Mar 1937 in Atherstone.

Notes for SARAH HALL:

From details on census forms Sarah was born in the hamlet of Upper Millichope in Eaton-under-Haywood, Shropshire.

The GRO Marriage certificate (see husband William's notes), gives Sarah's father as William Hall. My strong suspicion is that this is incorrect and her father is Edward - all the census evidence points to this.

Notes for WILLIAM UDALL:

Birth Certificate (Birth Marriage Death Certificates/B3xWilliamNewdallBirthLaterWilliamUdall)

William Newdall was born at 6.30 on 2 January 1860 at Sutton on the Hill. He was twin to Ann Newdall. His father is given as William Newdall a Labourer. His mother is given as Caroline Newdall formally Tipper. The birth was reported by Caroline Newdall the mother of Sutton on the Hill on 29 January 1860. The certificate number is 237. The registration district is Tutbury in the counties of Stafford and Derby. Obviously this is yet another possible example of a misspelling of the name Udall.

Marriage (Ref: birth Marriage Death Certificates/M3xUdallMarriage1882)

The marriage took place on 21 June 1882 in the Parish Church, Witherley, in the county of Leicester but in the registration district of Atherstone, Warwickshire. The certificate number is 148.

William Udall (a bachelor aged 24, a bachelor of Witherley and a butler) married Sarah Hall (a spinster aged 28 of Witherley). The father of the groom is given as William Udall a gardener. The father of the bride is given a William Hall also a gardener.

(The given ages of the bride and groom are probably inaccurate). The witnesses were Arthur John Wheatley and Annie Hall.

20 June 2003 note from Andy Cadman

It seems there was a name change somewhere along the line. I have found the family of William prior to the 1881 census with the name "Nudall" and occassionally as "Newdall" the name is used in the Sutton on the Hill area of Derby but is rare elsewhere. There is the odd registration at Lichfield and one death at Belper. Prior to about 1820 the family probably lived in Staffordshire. Williams birth was probably registered under the name "Newdall".

1881 Census

William and his future wife Sarah Hall were both in Service at Kilsall House, Dinnington, Shropshire.

The head of the house was George T. Hartley a "Magistrate C Stafford No Occupation". William age 22 was employed as "Butler Domestic Serv" Sarah age 30 "Housemaid Domestic Serv".
