Death Certificate (REf:Birth Marriage Death Certificates\D2xEnochPayne1865Age10Weeks )

Parish Burial Record (Ref:Family\EnochPayneJuniorDeath1864 History\PayneHistory )

The Death Certificate states that Enoch Payne a male age ten weeks died at Brook Street , Shepshed on the twentieth of February 1865.  The death was reported on the twenty eighth of March my George Smith of Brook Street (probably the deceased mother's father).  The certificate number is 122 in the registration district of Loughborough.

The Parish Burial Record contradicts the death date and states quite clearly that the burial took place on twelth of February 1865.  However, the story is interesting as Enoch's mother died in Child birth on the thitieth of November in Overseale.  Enoch must have been moved to Shepshed with his two sister to his Aunt Hannah Smith. He was batised in Shepshed with his two sisters on December 29th. The date of his death is probably around twelth of February.

Notes for DOROTHY PAYNE:

Article that appeared in Garden News when Dorothy Smedley (nee Payne) was about 78 years old.

Mrs Smedley was seventy eight last summer and I would like to tell you some of the things which she does to make her my choice for your "Go-ahead Gardener competition."

She has a garden approximately 3/4  acre. This is kept in apple pie order by herself apart  from the     occasional job such as cutting the hedge. Not  satisfied with this task alone she has run the garden as a commercial enterprise for a number years  now As well as a peaceful garden with lawns, pools, herbaceous borders, a variety of shrubs, extensive fruit and vegetable patches, she has three greenhouses one erected only last spring - at a time in life which most people are looking for less work Mrs Smedley sells over thirty different varieties of bedding plants, including latest novelties chrysanthemums, begonias, geraniums, rock plants, houseplants, perennials, hanging baskets cactus gardens, brassica and other vegetable plants, and this is only her spring produce. In the summer, she keeps regular customers supplied with tomatoes, cucumbers and cut flowers (even going to the trouble to follow dedicated  flower arrangers around her garden to cut specific blooms). For Chris tmas dozen bowls of bulbs are forced, plant gardens prepared, houseplants propagated and this is in addition to supplying wallflowers and biennials and

roses (for which she is an agent).

Mrs Smedley works a ten hour day all year around at her garden, often longer (she dashes home for lunch cooked in her preset cooker!) Her one-day out a year is visit to Shrewsbury Show to look for suitable new plants, garden frame or heater whichever is required.  She follows a very strict -routine, without which she admits she would not be able to cope with the work. She is always willing to help others with their gardening problems. If you don't believe these notes then just go and see what lies behind the green door at the top of North Street , Ashby de la Zouch. Mrs Smedley really is incredible for her age a real example and source of admiration

Also Known as " Doris "

Doris before she got married was in service at Colonel Atkins at Rothley, near Hinckley she was a Parlour Maid.  This is where she met Clara (wife of Thomas Cadman) who was the cook.  This link led her Daughter Dorothy meeting her husband in the future around 1944.

(Earlier she was in service with Dr. Logan a Doctor working in Market Street , Ashby de la Zouch).

Memories by daughter Dorothy Cadman (formally Smedley)  recorded in 2003

Hector enjoyed keeping animals as a hobby and kept pigeons, rabbits, cats and a dog.

He was a keen gardener and had three allotments until he and Doris bought a large garden which they turned in to a nursery and sold both a wide variety of plants, vegetables, fruit and cut flowers. Bees were also kept in the garden.

Hector was a keen sportsman in his ealry life and played football and cricket for Ashby Town .

Hector was over generous and very often when work mates said that they were "hard up" he would give them mony out of his wages and would have little left when he got home much to Doris 's disgust.  He often lent his work mates tools that  were often not returned.

He often repared property for the broad family, being a qualified bricklayer for no payment.

Here's a little story for starters:

The Payne of the Paynes

I hope that someone can help me solve a big puzzle of my Great, Great, Great Grandfather Enoch Payne born about 1880 in Burbage, Leics. His son Enoch Payne was born in Leicester in 1843. In 1851 census and 1861 census I find the younger Enoch in Shephed with his uncle. His Uncle dies in 1862 and shortly after the younger Enoch marries and on the marriage certificate he states that his father is deceased.

The problem is where were Enoch (born Burbage Abt. 1808) and Elizabeth Payne (Nee Hanson, born Horsley Woodhouse Abt. 1808)? I have searched for a trace of the death of either but so far have been unsuccessful. I have tried to find evidence of Elizabeth remarrying but again have so far been unsuccessful)

It is all part of a big puzzle I am trying to solve. I have got the younger Enoch above's life mapped out - he was born in Leicester in 1843 - I find him in Shepshed in the 1851 and 1861 census with his Uncle John Payne. His uncle dies in Shepshed in 1862 and Enoch Marries his first wife there in that year at age 18 - his first wife dies in childbirth at Moira a few years later. He then marries the Mary Ann above in 1871 in Ashby de la Zouch and is there in the census of 1871. Mary Ann gives birth to Maria above in Derby - 3 January 1872 at 50. Borough's Road. In 1873 Mary Ann gives birth to my great grandfather George Enoch Payne in Sheffield . In 1883 Mary Ann dies of Cancer of the Uterus. Enoch's main occupation until now is a collier. He remarries another Mary Ann a few years later. In the 1891 Census George Enoch is in Overseal as an apprentice saddler. His father is found dead in Attercliffe Canal (nr Sheffield ) in 1894 - he had been dismissed from a Steel Works and had put a pack together and was seeking work. Eventually George Enoch marries and ends up in my home town of Ashby de la Zouch .

The story of Enoch above is a sad one and the reason I am telling it is that someone may be able to help me trace his parents between 1844 and 1871 (one or both of them may have died before 1851 census). Enoch in the story above was born in Slater Street , Leicester in 1843. His parents were Enoch Payne (born 1808 in Burbage near Hinckley and Elizabeth Payne formally Hanson who was born in Horsley Woodhouse in 1808). They were married in Smalley in 1830 and had a child Mary Ann Payne who was born 1833 and christened at Marlpool Independent. In the 1841 census they were in Leicester . They had a child also called Enoch who died in 1842 and Enoch in the story above was born in 1843. (So this is a Derbyshire link – could be a clue or a wild goose chase).

(Prior to the stories above the earlier Payne's were in Burbage for much of the 1770's - all were christened at the Great Presbyterian meeting Place in Hinckley and I wonder if this non conformist tradition may be a clue to my problems).

If anyone can help it would be appreciated. I just want to find out why my great, great grandfather was left to be bought up by his Uncle
