LOCAL WAR CASUALITIES

ANOTHER ATHERSTONE SOLDIER KILLED

One more Atherstone home has been saddened by the loss of a brave son at the war, the victim in this case being Sapper Charles Edward Cadman Royal Engineers son of Mrs. Cadman fish monger, Market St .  After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. T Blower and Son young Cadman enlisted on January 2tht 1914 and his last visit home was at Easter of the same year. He went to the front on August 20th with the first British Expeditionary Force from this country and was killed by the bursting of one of the enemy's shells at Ypres Sunday April 25th He was present at the fighting at Mons in the early stages of the war, and also at most of the subsequent big engagements Like. many soldiers who have been as the front since last August, the late Sapper Cadman has had many thrilling experiences but be always wrote cheery letters home. He was 22 years of age, and much sympathy is felt for Mr. Cadman in the loss, of her son.

Information of the death was conveyed to the mother by one of the deceased soldier's "chums" who wrote under date April 27th as follows :-" I do not know whether Charlie has mentioned me in his letters.  If he has not, I will introduce myself. I was in the same party with him at Chatham and have been with him ever since. I expect you will, have had word from the War Office of his death.  I can hardly believe it myself as yet, as we have been 'chums' and worked together ever since we came out to France, being both in the same section. I thought I ought to write and let you know as much as I can. It happened on Sunday morning, the 25th April, at about half-past eight. We were in dug-outs behind the front line about a hundred yards, when a shell hit and burst in the dug out killing two and wounding the other two. I would have been' there myself if I had not been away on an orderly job. All his odds and ends, such as his watch, belt, etc., have been taken in, and I expect  will be sent to you through the Record Office I destroyed all his letters, &c. Several things he carried about with him I could not get, but I think the officer got them. 1 spoke to him about them, and he said they would be sent through the Record Office. I must offer you my warmest sympathy in your bereavement, but you have one consolation - that he died in the service of his country. It is a terrible war, and we have had it brought home to us more so for this last few days. All the four who were hurt were chums Yours, &c Sapper Arthur Marvin

Deceased was an enthusiastic member of the Atherstone Boy Scouts in his youthful days, and Mrs. Cadman has received the following sympathetic and appreciative letter from Scoutmaster E M. Tingle :-" I must sand you a note to say how grieved I am to hear of the death of your son. I am sure it must be a great shock to you. You must, on the other band, be proud that you have been able to give a son to die for the honour of his country. I have always been most interested in all that he was doing, and his great idea seemed to be to save his country from the devastation which he saw around him and the town and villages that he passed through I am fully persuaded that as far as ever he possibly could, be did his duty up to the hilt, and the best man who ever lived could not do more, As the Scout Master of the Boy Scouts, I can honestly say that there is no one I shall miss more than my friend Charlie.  Always good-tempered keen, willing and anxious to do all ho could for his brother Scouts. He was an ideal Scout and one that we all loved I always feel how very difficult it is to express all that I want at such times as these, but I am sure you will believe me when I say that you and your family have my very deepest sympathy.  May God, who alone knows  the anguish of a mother's sorrow, help and comfort you all."

SAPPER CHARLES EDWARD CADMAN

WHO DIED AGE 23

ON MONDAY 26 APRIL 1915.

SAPPER CADMAN, SON OF MRS. E. CADMAN, OF FRIARS GATE, MARKET ST. , ATHERSTONE, WARWICKSHIRE AND THE LATE MR. W. CADMAN.

REMEMBERED WITH HOHOUR YPRES (MENIN GATE MEMEORIAL)

The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres . This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence. There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites. The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates those of all Commonwealth nations except New Zealand who died in the Salient before 16 August 1917. Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war. Other New Zealand casualties are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery . The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer in July 1927.

Another Atherstonian Killed In Action.

Mrs. W. S. Udall South Street , Atherstone was officially notified yesterday of the death of her husband, Corporal William Sydney Udall Royal Engineers who was killed in action on June 3rd

The first intimation came from Captain Kidd, of the same company, who wrote on June 4th to the widow as follows:

"It is with a sad heart that I have, to write to tell you that your husband was killed by shell fire yesterday morning about a quarter past eleven outside our camp. Death was instantaneous as he was within a yard or two of the place where the shell struck the ground, so that be suffered no pain.  We laid him to rest this morning in a military cemetery here, and the chaplain says he will have a photograph of the grave taken, as soon as we have put up a cross and send it to you. I wish to tell you of the deep sympathy which the officers and men of the company feel for you in your loss which they also feel as their own for he was deservedly popular with all. For my own part I have lost a true friend."

Serg.-Major W. H Evans writes:-" Please accept the heartfelt sympathy of all the N.C.O.'s and men of my company in the great and sad loss of your husband who was killed in action by shell fire on Sunday, the 3rd June, at about  11am We are all grieved by the loss of one to whom we were so much attached, and his absence will be felt by no one more than myself. 'Syd,' as we always called him, was ever ready to oblige. Whether at his work or in play, he was ever the same - always ready to lend a hand to others. We shall all miss him very much.  It may be a little consolation for you to know that your husband suffered no pain.  He was killed instantaneously.  We laid him so rest in the new military cemetery at--. The name will probably be supplied to you by the authorities. The grave will be marked with a wooden cross bearing a suitable inscription, and the chaplain who read the burial service, promised to have a photograph taken and forward the same to you as soon as possible 'We all hope you will have strength so bear up under the great trouble; and may God comfort you and your dear children and all other members of the family. Our crosses are heavy, but the cross you are called upon to bear is tar more heavy.  God be with you"

Corporal Udall (elder son of Mr. and Mr.W. Udall, South Street ) was 32 years of age, and was well known in Atherstone.  He enlisted voluntarily in the early pars of May, 1915 and went out to the troups in January 1916.  Previous to joining the colours be was for some time butler at Atherstone  Hall and for several seasons was a playing member of the Atherstone Cricket Club.
